Whilst we are experiencing major enlargement within the EU and at the same time going through one of the most profound periods of political disengagement in some of the founder member countries, an unprecedented process has been set in motion which is attempting to harmonise Higher Education from the Atlantic to the Urals. This large economic area is increasingly creating opportunities for the free movement of its citizens through the development of mechanisms and conditions which have led to a new culture of mobility. Mobility is becoming an integral part of individual identity. This broad concept of what constitutes citizenship clearly has implications for policies in relation to language learning and education and training. In this context both European Studies and Intercultural Studies will play a new role and will gain a new interdisciplinary dimension. At the moment IPS (Setubal Polytechnic) is looking for ways to strengthen its internationalization strategies, by supporting initiatives in each college, with new services and new organisational structures. As this process of adapting our courses comes to an end and at time of so many changes in the name of European integration, we need to evaluate our the success of our response at an institutional level and to compare our experiences with others in a collective setting.
